Every harvest season Thomas and our winemaking team plan a special wine production project that utilizes a unique grape variety or winemaking technique that leverages the talent and experiences of our harvest interns. Each year, we plan to release this small production “workshop” or “L’Atelier” wine as a Club feature selection. As a very small production wine, these L’Atelier bottlings will be almost exclusively available to club members only with very limited availability to the general public at our tasting room and on our website.

Thomas’ objective for these projects is to provide an opportunity for the interns to share their skills with us with the same enthusiasm we are sharing our craft with them. The long-term result will be new experiences and ideas we share with one another that will help us make better wine and think about winemaking from ever expanding points of view.

This year our featured wine is 2017 L’Espoir Riesling. This fruit for this wine was sourced from Mimi Casteel’s Hope Well Vineyard, which is less than a mile away from Lingua Franca. The fruit arrived at the crush pad in early October 2017 in perfect ripeness with balanced flavor and fresh, lively acidity. This project was led primarily by our harvest intern, Daniel Fries, a 7th generation wine grower from the Mosel in Germany — so he knows a thing or two about making a high-quality dry Riesling!

The aroma of L’Espoir is a combination of meyer lemon and jasmine with a dry palate framed around exceptional texture and persistent freshness defined with a natural acidity. The summer sunshine throughout 2017 developed harmonious flavors of ripe apricot and pear that enhances the velvety mouthfeel. We hope you enjoy the experience of sharing L'Espoir with your friends and family as much as we enjoyed the experience of making it with our friend, Daniel.
